By 1850 the Rowters has emigrated to Liverpool and were living in Shaws Alley as shown by the 1851 census. John’s other daughter Susan and her husband are still living in Mevagissey at this time. Nicholas was christened in Cornwall in 1849 so they must have left after this.

Note name is now Routter, we have John, Ann and Nicholas William living in Shaws Alley. John is born in St Austell not Mevagissey.

I often wonder what drove them to Liverpool, John and Ann were nearing 50 years old, perhaps it was because all their other children had died, perhaps they wanted to give Nicholas a chance of a better future. There was cholera in Mevagissy and the Bank had recently failed. By 1861 the rest of the family had joined them in Liverpool and were living in Lower Harrington Street.
